When and how to apply sunscreen in your skincare routine?

Using sunscreen daily is an important part of your routine and goes far beyond simply preventing sunburn. In fact, sunscreen plays an essential role in protecting the skin against damage caused by UV rays, but not only that. Sun creams now offer other benefits such as protection against environmental aggressors, like sun & pollution, or helping the skin cope with skin disorders (acne, excess sebum, redness...).

Find out how to use your sun cream every day for optimum protection!

Sunscreens protect the skin from solar radiation to prevent sunburn photoaging and skin cancer

Most sunscreen only protect against UVA & UVB rays.

However, some sunscreens, like Photoderm Xdefense ultra-fluid SPF50+ offer more complete protection against a broad spectrum of radiation. In addition to blocking UVA and UVB rays, our advanced formula also protects against visible light and infrared rays, which are harmful to the skin.

Sun protection products protect the skin against UV rays. There are two types, with overlapping effects on the skin:

- UVB rays, which affect the superficial layers of the skin, causing sunburn and risk of developing skin cancer.

- UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, causing photoaging and risk of developing skin cancer. These cause wrinkles, sagging skin and the appearance of pigmentation spots.

The sun contains other types of radiation that are also harmful to the skin: visible light and infrared radiation. Like UVA, visible light and IR radiation pass through clouds and windows, silently inflicting damage on the skin day after day, leading to photoaging.

Although the sun is beneficial for the body: production of vitamin D, improved mood, repeated or prolonged unprotected exposure is hazardous to skin health, which is why you can take action to protect your skin. It's also important to know that solar radiations are present in all seasons, not just in summer.

Protecting it is the key to healthy skin.

There are two categories of sunscreen: chemical and mineral. Each has its own characteristics and benefits. Whichever protection you choose, it's important to make it part of your daily routine to protect your skin from UV damage.

- Chemical sunscreens: This category of sunscreens absorbs UV rays. Chemical sunscreens offer light-textured products with a more invisible finish than mineral sunscreens.

- Mineral sunscreens: This category of sunscreens is formulated with physical sunscreens, which reflect or disperse UV rays. These filters are ideal for very sensitive skin prone to irritation or allergic reactions.

The correct order of application

To make the most of your sun protection, it's important to know when to apply it as part of your routine. Before moisturizing cream? Before serum? We tell you here!

We recommend applying sunscreen after moisturizing. The moisturizer will prepare the skin and will makes it easier to apply the sunscreen and ensuring even coverage. After moisturizer and sunscreen, your skin is ready for make-up if you wish!

Serums are generally applied after cleansers and before moisturizers. Like creams and other galenic products, they contain active ingredients that target specific concerns (hydration, dark spots, redness...).

So, to form a protective barrier on the skin through sun protection, it's important that sunscreen is applied after serum and moisturizer.

For a minimalist routine, use a sunscreen with a skincare action to be applied directly after cleansing.

Tinted vs untinted sunscreen

When it comes to sun protection, it's essential to choose the product that best suits your needs. To this end, non-tinted and tinted protection products have appeared on the market.

You can choose a non-tinted protection, ideal for leaving your face natural. Alternatively, you can choose a tinted protection that matches your phototype, to even out your complexion and give it a healthy glow.

Do you really need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day?

Is it necessary to reapply sunscreen throughout the day? The ideal answer is yes. In fact, sunscreen needs to be reapplied frequently to maintain effective protection especially after sweating, swimming or toweling off.

For easy reapplication throughout the day, opt for lightweight formulas that leave an invisible finish on the skin, such as Photoderm XDEFENSE ULTRA FLUID SPF50+

Sunscreen texture importance for your skincare routine

When choosing a sunscreen for daily use, texture plays a crucial role in comfort and compatibility with other products in the routine.

Ultra-fluid sunscreens seem to be the ideal texture for daily protection, as they are suitable for all skin types and can be easily layered over other skincare products.

For example, Photoderm XDEFENSE ULTRA FLUID SPF50+ has been developed in an ultra-sensorial galenic formulation and invisible ultra dry touch ideal for daily healthy-looking skin.

Its tinted versions will replace foundation by unifying the skin, giving a healthy-glow effect and a natural finish.

Other types of galenic formulas are suitable depending on your needs and skin type: milks, creams, gel-creams... The possibilities are endless!
